What Causes Cloudy Pool Water?

Cloudy pool water is caused by the presence of particles that are too small to be filtered and are also unremovable by oxidation. There are four main reasons that a swimming pool can get cloudy water.

  • Your pool filter is dirty. In many instances, cleaning or backwashing your filter can alleviate the cloudiness issue.
  • Your pump may need to run longer. Not running your pump long enough means only a small percentage of the water is actually being filtered.
  • Your pool water chemistry is not balanced. High chlorine is one of the top reasons that pool owners experience cloudy water, but high pH, high total alkalinity, high calcium hardness or a high TDS (total dissolved solids) can also lead to cloudy water.
  • There are environmental factors at play. Anything from weather, wildlife or even nearby construction can cause your pool to be cloudy. Environmental factors also include swimmers who can introduce things like make-up, hair & skin products or sweat into your pool.
