Owning a pool invariably means that you will have to add chemicals to it. Whether it is a chemistry adjustment or a weekly maintenance dose, you will need to handle some chemical product at some point.
Pool chemistry is what makes your pool water clear and safe to swim in, but all pool owners should be precautious when handling and storing pool chemicals. Follow the directions below to ensure you are storing and handling your pool chemicals properly.
• Keep chemicals away from children and pets- a locked storage container in a cool, dry place is the best option for chemical storage
• Keep chemicals that are potentially corrosive, such as liquid chlorine and muriatic acid, away from metal items such as bicycles and lawnmowers
• Never mix different chemicals together. When you need to add more than one product, add them separately
• Wear protective equipment such as gloves, a mask to avoid breathing fumes and long clothing to avoid skin exposure
• Never add water to chemicals when using a mixing pail
• Do not smoke or vape around chemicals
• Use a clean, dry scoop or Pinch A Penny mixing cup to measure chemicals
• Dilute small spills with pool water
• Never reuse containers1
• Never use a vacuum to clean up spills
• Read all warning labels and directions for storage and handling
If you follow these directions you will have no problems with chemical storage or handling. The most important thing to remember about pools is safety, so be aware at all times.
